Rights Respecting Schools
We are working in partnership with Unicef on our journey to becoming a Rights Respecting School, putting children’s rights at the heart of our school.
What are 'Children's Rights'?
Every child is entitled to specific human rights. These rights are detailed in the United Nations Convention (UNC) on the Right of the Child. There are 54 articles which explain all the rights that children hold legally across the world.
“Article 1 (definition of the child): Everyone under the age of 18 has all the rights in the Convention.”
What is a Rights Respecting School?
A Rights Respecting School not only teaches about children's rights but also models rights and respect in all its relationships: between teachers / adults and pupils, between adults and between pupils. Together, young people and the school community learn about children’s rights, putting them into practice every day.
There are four key areas of impact for children at a Rights Respecting school; wellbeing, participation, relationships and self-esteem. The difference that a Rights Respecting School makes goes beyond the school gates, making a positive impact on the whole community, with the outcome being that:
- Children are healthier and happier
- Children feel safe
- Children have better relationships
- Children become active and involved in school life and the wider world.
What is happening at Thomson House?
At Thomson House, we have recently (May 2023) been awarded the Bronze award, recognising our commitment to embedding children's rights throughout our policies, practices and ethos.
Our aim is to ensure that the UNC Rights of the Child, along with our values of kindness, courage and curiosity, underpin all that we do at Thomson House School, from our Early Years right through to Key Stage Two. We aim for our children to be passionate advocates for the rights of other children, whilst understanding that all adults are duty bearers and are duty-bound to help all children enjoy their rights. By learning about their rights, our children also learn about the importance of respecting the rights of others.
