Maths at THS

At Thomson House, we take great pride in the accomplishments of our talented mathematicians. Here’s a general overview of our recent participation in various prestigious mathematics competitions:

Junior Maths Challenge
Our Upper School pupils participate annually in the Junior Maths Challenge (JMC), a national competition involving around 150,000 pupils across the UK. The level of the JMC is pitched at Year 8 and 9 age children, but some of our Year 5 and 6 pupils simply love facing the challenging problems it has to offer and being able to showcase their mathematical skills.

Olympiad
Following the Junior Maths Challenge, some of our pupils' scores allow them to progress to the next round of the Olympiad. This is where the ante is upped - a 2 hour competition with 16 testing problems they must solve.

Intermediate Maths Challenge                                                                                                            Some of our Year 6 Maths Challenge Club members enter the Intermediate Maths Challenge, a competition aimed at pupils up to Year 11. This astounding level of maths should be well beyond the years of primary aged pupils; we are so proud of anyone who is up for tackling it!

Grey Kangaroo                                                                                                                                           Up next, is The Grey Kangaroo. Some of our mathematically passionate pupils participate in the demanding second round of the Intermediate Maths Challenge. Our pupils dedicate significant time to preparation, including practice papers and additional support sessions.
